BMW K1200
BMW introduced the K Series of motorcycles in the fall of 2004 and the series consists of the K1200 S which was designed as a supersport motorcycle. The engine on the K 1200S is a in-line four cylinder, liquid cooled engine featuring 165 horsepower. A K1200 S set a new land speed record for production bikes at the Bonneville Salt Flats in the US by exceeding 174 miles per hour.

BMW later launched the K1200 R naked roadster and the K1200 GT sport tourer that were available for sale in the spring on 2006. All three of these K-Series motorcycles use the same in-line four cylinder engine, with different degrees of power.

The latest addition to the K-Series is the K 1200 R Sport that came onto the market in 2007. This motorcycle sports a semi-fairing and is the sport touring version of the K 1200 R.

The K series have water cooled engines of three or four cylinders. The engine was longitudinal or laid out on its left side with the cylinder heads on the left side and the crankshaft on the right hand side. This engine was nicknamed the ‘Flying Brick’ because of how it was laid out.

The first K production bike was the K 100 in 1983. Then came the K100, the K 100RT in 1984 and the K 100LT in 1986. In 1987 the K100 was equipped with ABS brakes, and was the very first motorcycle anywhere to have them. Up until 1993 BMW made the K1 which was a full fairing version of the K100 and only 6,900 were made.

The K1200 engine is a 1157cc transverse inline four. It has a striking 55 degree forward tilt and a 17 inch width, giving the cycle a low center of mass. This engine produces 165 horsepower. The transverse K1200 engine is built into the K 1200 S, R, R Sport and GT models.
